Studio One 4 Keeps Freezing

All software can have issues and there's nothing more frustrating to be in the middle of a track and finding your DAW crashes - Studio One is no exception. However before you blame a bug there's three things to check before calling support or ranting online about how terrible the product is.

Studio One has not caused ME a single problem because I have been making music with other DAWs while I have followed the evolution of Studio One and I will continue to make music without S1. I just think that Presonus has made a big BIG VERY BIG mistake not focusing on this area. Sep 03, 2014  Studio one and Capture keep freezing and often shuts my Mac down for a restart. I get a message that my interface (studio live 16.4.2 ai) keeps dropping out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've spent all week trying to figure this stuff out, so here I am! A Subreddit for Users of Studio One r/StudioOne is an educational tool. Please post anything related to Studio One; compatible hardware and software, synths, VSTs, controllers, etc. Questions about effects, getting a certain sound, troubleshooting, general or specific production questions and the like are welcome.

1. Is Your Setup A Supported Specification?

It's always important when buying any software to make sure your computer, software and audio interface are all supported by the manufacturer. What a company means by the term 'supported' is that although it may run, it has not been tested and or/validated to run with that configuration. Therefore the company has no responsibility to offer you any kind of support if you have issues when using their product. Many people run software on unsupported machines without issue, but if you are having crashes and things not working as intended then this is the first place to look.

2. Do you have bad memory installed on your computer?

Studio One 4 Keeps Freezing Free

There is always a temptation to buy cheap memory to use in your computer, but it is cheap for a reason, however you can get some bargains on quality memory from brands like Crucial, OWC and Kingston, so that is worth checking out. If you are having problems and need to check if the issue is related to bad RAM then the way to test this is as follows.

  • Turn off your machine and place it on a static free workspace.
  • Carefully remove one stick of the RAM and then restart your machine.
  • See if the error occurs, if it does then repeat the process replacing the stick you took out and removing another stick.
  • If you find during this process that the problem has disappeared then it may be some bad RAM that you need to replace.

3. Do you have a bad plug-in?

Studio

Perhaps the number one reason to crash a DAW is a bad plug-in, it may need an update, or it may have a bug. Although Studio One does not have crash protection on a plug-in by plug-in level, it will ignore bad plug-ins at startup if they cause Studio One to crash during the validation process. You can see in the image above where Studio One has identified plug-ins it needs to ignore.

One area where this is more likely to occur is when using cracks of plug-ins, which have been modified to circumvent the protection system - when this is done it may make the plug-in unstable. If you want a trouble free system then our advice is to stay away from cracks.

Summary

All software has bugs, but on the whole Studio One is a rock solid DAW that should give you few issues when trying to make music or edit audio. As we said at the start of this article always make sure you've eliminated other possibilities before blaming it on a bug.

Hi All,
I am having an issue with my board freezing up. There is a loud screech and then all meters freeze and there is no controlling them or getting sound. This is happening at all different time intervals and I can turn off the board and restart but eventually it will freeze again. Doesn't matter if I am hooked into my MacBook or stand alone. I even tried the factory reset but that didn't help. Any suggestions would be appreciated, but I think this will need to be sent back for repair.

You have made the right troubleshooting moves. It's probably time to get a service ticket started and get it in for repair.

Sounds like it might be an intermittent power supply problem. I had one board that the inrush current limiter Thermistor RT1 on the supply was cracked and supply was intermittent. Unless experienced do not work on the power supply due to lethal voltages present.
Try using forced air from a fan to drive cool air into the side vent holes from the right side.

Start a tech service ticket. Even if it is out of warrenty, it is only less than 200 bucks to get it serviced by presonus, and they give you another one year warrenty after that. It is worth it. I've had mine serviced for what sounds like the same kind of issue years ago and still kicking every weekend.

You say servicing is only $299? Somebody said their cost was over $600... doesn't compute...

Thanks guys! I have a ticket going now. This is actually my second board. First one crapped out after the 3rd time turning it on 2 years ago. I love this board though so I will deal with it.

At one point in time it was $175 to have a 16.4.2 service by presonus in baton rouge, no mater what the problem. I assume they still have the same rates and service center, I sent mine back twice, but they were both within the warrenty timeframe so it was free for me. Cost me $25 to ship it, they paid shipping home

I did a search on google about the 16.4.2 freezing up and the first thread was from 2010. Three pages worth of problems with no solution. Here I have a board built in 2013 and have the current firemware into a really good Lenovo laptop. Same problem, worked two days then froze up. -- The upper right hand corner of the board has 7 light panels. The Second GR is red all the way down. No sound going in or coming out of the board. I have placed a ticket with one response that was of no help.
I have tried everything - reboot, return to factory presets, re-install firmware, start the mixer first the the computer, stood on my head and whistle Dixie. Nothing, nada.
I am totally disappointed in Presonus. They make a good product that dies and can't be brought back to life. After 3 years the same issue exist that should have been fixed a long time ago.
How do you get them to answer a request? I live in Baton Rouge. I know where there office is... Me thinks a trip there may be the answer or at least a beginning,
Any other ideas?

I started a ticket through the support tab. I am filling out my RA form today and sending it down to them once I have the RA number. Cost for repair is $175.00, unless under warranty of course. Make sure your board is registered online here as well to help facilitate your request for service.
